... houses are simply a hole in the ground that you pour even more money AND a ton of time into.
Not exactly what we got (ours are huge and custom), but they’re ridiculously expensive roller shades in some pattern that I reluctantly approved.
You’d be floored by how much was spent on stuff looking in this direction (that table is custom made from architectural VG material). The lamp shade is as stupid as it looks, we can’t get it level. The wood venetian blinds behind it are on all the windows in the house beside the six we just got roller shades for. Based on the quote I just got on replacing them on the ground floor, there is at least $10k worth of them throughout the house and we’re keeping them... Still need to put built-ins in the alcove behind this chair and the matching alcove to the left of the fireplace. Bonus doggo bed in that divisive pattern that they put on everything these days.
Just got through spending over a day and a half painting the nursery, too. I’d add a picture, but my wife and MIL are swarming the room obsessed about colors.
Coming full circle, the wife still wants a car, but we definitely can not afford it with how much she keeps burning on this silly house. At least a boat lets you see interesting new places in exchange for the money you pour into it.

Truth. The last house I owned I put $25,000 into it over 7 years plus mortgage and property taxes. So yeah money pit.

Fixing a house is worth it, decorating it is what lights money on fire. Zero ROI, bunch of stuff you don't use, and no one else wants.

Ideally, the home appreciates in value. The boat will absolutely depreciate.
But you already knew that.

That sounds like a deal compared to my current rate. Hoping to at least stem the bleeding, but it’s just a seemingly-constant barrage.

Truth. Mind you, I don’t think most of our actual fixes will do much for the value, nobody cares about whether things are well maintained, they just care if the house exists in this market. It’s ridiculous.
W e are keeping the old blinds and really needed the new ones because for some reason former owners/occupants never put them on these stupid windows that let in a ton of heat from the star of death (3 of the 6 are pointing directly w est). Still, so expensive.
The furniture and so forth is just crazy. The furniture/rugs/etc to fill this stupid house has thus far cost as much as an average new car...

Theoretically. Thinking of what I spend on the house, it’s probably no better than neutral at this point.
The house still doesn’t enrich my life like the boat could.

We’ve lived in our current house 10 years; it was ~$350k, and with our current market it might (shockingly) be worth a little less, because 2008. But we’ve put $10k/year into one thing or another, on average, just to keep it up to our standards. Granted, I do genuinely believe it’s in better shape than when we bought it, and in a few ways that’s objectively true (new kitchen, new heating system, new roof) but still. That’s $100k over 10 years, that hasn’t really added value, it’s just upkeep basically. So welcome to homeownership I guess? I wouldn’t trade it though. I really love being able to do whatever the hell I want.
